Aside from excellent bedside manner and the ability to provide culturally competent, holistic care, Galley is a role model on the unit.
This nurse is simply the sweetest, most caring human being. She is always a bright light to have on the unit and consistently provides great care for her patients. Because of her own culture and religion, she often educates staff on other cultures so we can provide better care to our diverse patient population. She is never forceful or oversharing about her culture/religion but is more than happy to share or help when staff have questions or are caring for a patient with limited English proficiency. This nurse speaks several languages and brings a sense of familiarity to patients who often do not see a familiar face or hear someone speak their language in the medical field, especially with the pandemic and lack of visitors.
Galley recently cared for an elderly patient who spoke English fluently but also spoke 7 different languages and had a strong Islamic faith. This nurse helped understand cultural and religious preferences that were not as obvious to other nurses. This nurse spent extra time at the patient's bedside feeding her, speaking with her in other languages, helping her recite the 99 names of Allah, playing religious music, and dancing with her while she worked with PT. This nurse helped explain to the doctors that the patient was planning to fast for Ramadan and how to tailor her medical care by providing a small rate of IV fluids while the patient was fasting. This nurse also noticed the patient's nails were getting long, and though she could not cut them, this nurse gave the patient a mini "manicure" soaking her hands in warm water and washing them very well. The patient loved this and talked about it the rest of the day!
Aside from excellent bedside manner and the ability to provide culturally competent, holistic care, this nurse is a role model on the unit. Despite being a relatively newer nurse, she is always moving around the unit helping other nurses. She is so on top of her time management, it's amazing! She will help clean patients up when you need an extra hand, give medications for you, draw blood if you need a STAT lab and are drowning, and is the ultimate advocate for nurses to take care of themselves. You will always find this nurse willing to cover another nurse's lunch break because she genuinely wants her peers to take care of themselves. She understands you cannot pour from an empty cup.
Galley is simply superwoman both at work and at home with two young kids, in school studying to be a nurse practitioner, and working another job part-time as a school nurse purely because she has a passion for public health. I am in awe of this nurse. Every day I work with her I know it's going to be a good day no matter what happens. She is kind to everyone she meets and is such a lovely human being. This nurse is an irreplaceable asset to our unit and is truly a DAISY Nurse.
