Garret supported a flow of family members who steadily filed in to cry, hold hands, tell stories…and say their goodbyes to J.
J, a beloved nurse and teammate, was emergently admitted to ICU following a tragic house fire. J ultimately lost her life from the effects of the fire. Garret was the nurse assigned to that empty room – J came up from the ED. Her husband, M, was not as tragically injured but was under observation status as a patient. M was obviously distraught while knowing his wife was clinging to life and he did not want to leave her side, much less go be a patient in his own assigned room. Garret, who is also happily married, was approached and the situation was explained to him. The ICU prepared a stretcher space for M’s stretcher to be placed in full view outside J’s ICU room. Nearly immediately after arriving to ICU, J’s condition deteriorated even more. No less than fifteen people such as MDs, RNs, therapists, and specialists were in her room reviving her – event after event. Garret and the ICU team cared for J and kept M as updated and involved as the situation would allow. Over the next hours and after several updates from the ICU doctors, all knew the injuries were too much for her to overcome. From that point, Garret supported a flow of family members who steadily filed in to cry, hold hands, tell stories…and say their goodbyes to J. She eventually died that day shortly after 4 pm. So many visitor restrictions have surrounded the ICU during this COVID pandemic. J was vaccinated, an advocate for the vaccine, cared for COVID patients just the day prior, and had to enforce visitation limitations over the past eighteen months. With COVID off the table for J, her family is ever so thankful for the open visitation allowed to her husband and her family over the last 8-9 hours of her life. They want Garrett and ICU recognized for this gift of time they were given at a time of such tragic loss. When later thanked by ICU leadership, Garret said, ”I get it. It’s what I would want for me/my wife/family.”
