I would like to nominate Garrett Michael for his exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication and commitment, and genuine compassion for our unit. When Garrett took the job as Manager for IMCU, I honestly had my doubts that he or anyone else could turn this unit around; we were in a bad place, and I was ready to leave. Nursing ratios were 4:1, aside from reduced assignments, the culture was particularly negative, and we were not a place people wanted to work. Since taking over, Garrett has accomplished many things on this unit, including doing the impossible (making us a 3:1), he continually creates a positive working environment despite many challenging obstacles, and he genuinely cares for staff and wants to see them improve and reach their goals. 

What sets Garrett apart from other leaders is his tenacity to get things done. If he sets a goal for this unit, nothing will stop him from accomplishing it. I know this because, regretfully, I have doubted him on occasion, and he has proved me wrong at every turn. I also do not know of any other manager who will take patients to CT, Nuclear medicine, pass medications, answer call lights, help turn patients, break nurses, and just help out on the floor on busy days. 

I can proudly say that IMCU has become a place where people want to work, and Garrett Michael is a huge reason for the positive changes in this unit. I can't think of anyone more deserving of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
