Gavin took the time to research and create a handmade pamphlet for the patient containing different resources and shelters that were free in the community and available to the patient.
As the Nurse Manager on the floor where Gavin completed his capstone rotation, I wanted to reach out and express how impressed I am with the Capstone student, Gavin Gagucas. I have had the opportunity to work several night shifts with him at 8 Robert's. He is very kind, team-oriented, willing to learn, and provides compassionate patient-centered care.
This past weekend, I was scheduled as the Charge Nurse on duty and had the pleasure of working with Gavin. His preceptor came to the front of the unit and said that she wanted to give him "Kudos" for the amazing job he did with their patient. She informed me that Gavin completed his assessment on the patient. This patient was homeless and did not have access to a lot of resources. Gavin took the time to research and create a handmade pamphlet for the patient containing different resources and shelters that were free in the community and available to the patient.
After creating the pamphlet, he went back into the room and provided education to the patient, utilizing the pamphlet as a tool. Gavin explained to me that he just finished his 7-week Community Clinical, and this was all the information he recently learned. As a former LHSON alumnus, I was so proud of Gavin. It was inspiring to see how he is already applying his education in practice and advocating for his patients' needs.
The patient was very appreciative. BUMC's Nursing care model is based on synergy and providing a safe passage for the patients. Gavin was able to assist in the safe passage for this patient and be an active participant in his discharge plan. It has been a pleasure working with Gavin!
