After gastric cancer surgery, I was caught with anastomotic fistula, which caused fever and abdominal infection back and forth. This long and complicated process was truly torture which drove me crazy. I lied in bed and stared at the ceiling with a poker face, waiting for death to come around. I knew nurses cared about me, but when sharp pain or dyspnea attacked me, their comfort seemed so feeble. My impatience did not scare Nurse Ge Yao off. Every night she came to work, she always smiled and asked how I was on the day. Sometimes I felt out of breath with a heavy weight on my chest. Ge Yao gently touched my shoulder, held my hands, and showed me to take a deep breath with her, which truly calmed me down. At once, I felt warm inside. My son, running a company, and my daughter, a professor at Peking University, are always too busy to be here with me. It was Ge Yao who was always there for me.
One day, I came to the room after the interventional operation. I felt dirty as I experienced gatism. I was embarrassed when Ge Yao was cleaning my body. I would like my children to do that for me, you know. And again, it was Ge Yao, keeping smiling and doing all the things for me.
Ge Yao has a good sense of humor. When I was watching TV reporting on the National People's Congress and the Chinese Political Consultation Conference, she said, "Wow, you are great! You care about the Party and the country even when you are in the hospital!" which made me laugh for quite a few minutes! When I told Ge Yao I slept well when she was on night shift, she said she would ask for more night shifts for me! I laughed and said no, of course, but I was so touched.
My son found another doctor in Shanghai for me, but I would like to stay at SRRSH. Ms. Ge Yao is here as long as her professional colleagues. Those adorable people bring me laughter, warmth, and faith. Thank you so much!
