Overall, through this incredibly stressful time, Gen is like a bright light. I trust her competence.
I honestly wish Gen could just be my nurse 24/7. After three nights in the hospital with pre-eclampsia, I am lying in bed with no end in sight of when I might go home. And what I decide to do with myself is to write about how Gen has just been so wonderful. It is important to me that this doesn't get lost in the shuffle and that you guys know how great she is. I tell myself that if I have to be here another week, the silver lining is that maybe I will be lucky enough to get assigned to her next weekend.

What sets Gen apart immediately is a multitude of factors, the most important of which are:

-Her ability to educate and take the time to explain everything that is going on even with a full floor and patient load. Gen would even explain things that I was puzzled about and didn't understand even trying to ask the nurse I had on the shift before her. For example, one of many things she helped explain was how to read the NST test, the accelerations and decelerations, why the test was being done, and why it was important.

-I felt like Gen was an advocate for me and truly cared about my well-being. For example, when she noticed a trend of my blood pressure getting higher in the evenings, yet no adjustments to the medications were made, talked to me about it and reached out to the doctor.

-Gen's pro-activeness in thinking of things I might not know to ask. For example, realizing that no one had contacted the NICU doctors to help explain to us what would happen when we delivered a preemie baby.

-Gen's compassion and friendly demeanor. You could always tell that she was trying to think of your comfort. Telling me ahead of time what the plan was in order to prepare me. Considering where there was wiggle room that might make me more comfortable-if I needed Tylenol for a headache and wanted to sleep she'd check and say that it would be okay to draw blood a little earlier so I wouldn't be interrupted.

Overall, through this incredibly stressful time, Gen is like a bright light. I trust her competence. I am going to say again, that I trust Gen's competence that I am getting great care. This is an immense relief and comfort that is very hard to explain until your world crashes around you. Gen takes away some of the overwhelming feeling, and that is truly priceless. I also truly appreciate her patience in taking the time to share her expertise and take comfort in knowing that I am in good and friendly hands.
