She was consistently attentive—not only to my mother’s medical needs, but to the emotional needs of our entire family.
I am writing to nominate Nurse Gen for a DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary care she provided to my mother M during her stay on the oncology floor. Gen was the very first nurse assigned to us, and from that moment she set the tone for the entire hospitalization on that floor. In a unit filled with exceptional nurses, she somehow managed to stand out as truly remarkable. Gen brought a calming presence into an otherwise overwhelming and emotional time. She was consistently attentive—not only to my mother’s medical needs, but to the emotional needs of our entire family. She took the time to explain complex medical information in a clear and compassionate way for my nonmedical father, ensuring he felt informed and supported. She intuitively knew when to give us space and when to step in, always remaining quietly available, steady, and reassuring.
When we were faced with the devastating decision to transition my mother to comfort-focused care, Gen remained with us throughout that process. She served as a calm, guiding presence as we navigated some of the most difficult decisions of our lives. Her composure, empathy, and gentle guidance helped us feel less alone in that moment. My mother was a nurse herself, and when she was able, she commented on the exceptional quality of Gen’s care. That praise meant a great deal coming from someone who spent her own career at the bedside on 4N in the 1970s-90s. As a physician at another institution, I have had the privilege of working alongside many outstanding nurses over the years. Even among that distinguished group, Gen stands out as truly exceptional. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of recognition during our stay. Her clinical skill, emotional intelligence, and unwavering compassion left a lasting impact on our family that we will never forget.
