I don't know if she knew the struggle I was going through, but she gave me the most amazing gift by letting me help care for my grandpa when he needed, no, when I needed it most.
Genevieve took such great care of my grandpa while he was in the ICU. She told him he reminded her of her father-in-law, and she treated him as she would her own family. She made him laugh and smile during one of the most challenging times in his 85 years. I would like to nominate Genevieve for the DAISY Award, not only for the amazing care she gave my grandpa, but for what she did for me, as a patient's family member who is also a nurse. I was hesitant to even be in the hospital with my grandpa, because I know how challenging family members in healthcare can be. I sat in the room watching Gen take care of my grandpa, literally sitting on my hands, trying to stop myself from jumping in. Finally, I couldn't take it any longer and offered to help. He was confused off and on, they had mittens on him to prevent him from pulling out any more lines and to say he did not like those mittens was an understatement. I tried my best to convince him to keep the mittens on, but he wasn't having it. He even said, "YOU put them on and tell me how much YOU like them." I asked if I may sit with him with the mittens off and make sure he doesn't pull anything. I said to Gen, "Do you trust me?" Her trusting smile is something I'll never forget. I don't know if she knew the struggle I was going through, but she gave me the most amazing gift by letting me help care for my grandpa when he needed, no, when I needed it most. Thank you, Genevieve, for your two days with my grandpa. I can't thank you enough.
