September 2023 Honoree
Genevieve Vidas, RN, CRRN
Unfortunately, I am not new to hospitals. I personally worked in a NYC hospital as a speech pathologist in the 70s and 80s and over the years have been a patient as well. Most recently, I have been in the battle of my life with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It is with this kind of experience that you know when a nurse just rises above the rest. Genevieve is just that nurse.
I arrived from the ED exhausted and depressed. I had been vomiting and was dehydrated. Jen, as she cheerfully told me to call her, went about making my room as cozy as it could be while also making sure she carefully checked my chart. I asked about my X-rays and she told me the results. Then she saw that food had been ordered for me and the x-ray had a diagnosis of partial bowel obstruction! She told me to hold off on the food and she immediately called the doctor. The doctor saw the diagnosis and looked at the films and did not see any problems. He contacted the radiologist who confirmed he meant to write NO bowel obstruction! This easily could have been overlooked. In this case, it wouldn’t have caused a problem, but it felt good to know she had my back.
Genevieve constantly doted on me like a loving mother and never lost her cheerful manner. She is devoted to her patients and is a skilled medical practitioner.
