Genie consistently demonstrates the qualities that define an exceptional nurse: compassion, critical thinking, professionalism, and a genuine passion for patient care.
I am honored to nominate Genie Rene for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary dedication to pediatric patients. Her passion for this specialty shines through in the compassionate care she provides, always going above and beyond to comfort both children and their families. Creating innovative ways of teaching this population about their disease while also engaging their parents.
During our rotation in Peds, we had the opportunity to attend the cardiac ICU. Genie formed a deep bond with a young patient facing a complex heart condition. She not only provided exceptional clinical care but also took the time to engage with the child in ways that eased their anxiety: reading stories, holding their hand during difficult procedures, playing games, and being a source of strength for the family. Her ability to create trust in such a high-stress environment was truly remarkable.
Beyond her patient interactions, she is a strong advocate, ensuring that each child’s voice is heard and that their needs are met. She demonstrates exceptional skill, critical thinking, and a natural ability to connect with both patients and peers. Her dedication to pediatric care is inspiring.

One particular situation during our pediatric clinical rotation illustrates her extraordinary abilities. We were assigned to observe a nurse caring for a patient when the child's condition suddenly worsened. I quickly stepped forward to assess the situation while she immediately pressed the code button and calmly communicated the patient's status to the nurse. Together, we worked to provide support to the medical team, assisting with tasks within our scope, such as repositioning the bed and ensuring the area was clear for the rapid response team.
Throughout the event, she remained composed, demonstrating keen observation skills and a proactive attitude. Her ability to stay calm under pressure was evident as she provided comfort to the patient’s family by offering reassuring words while the medical team performed the necessary interventions.
