My dad was diagnosed with dementia several years ago. The disease has taken a toll on his memory and mental capacities to the point of demonstrating aggressive behavior due to frustration and confusion. My dad is a Veteran who served in the US Airforce during the Vietnam Conflict. He was transported to the VAMC ED and was admitted to 4 East. The first night of my dad's stay was very tough for everyone, including him. My dad's physical strength and determined nature is significantly amplified by his diagnosis and makes him a difficult patient to manage.
George Elbich, RN assigned to 4 East to care for my father connected with my dad on a professional caring level like I have not seen in a long time. My dad responds to Nurse George like they were lifelong friends. When my dad first arrived at 4 East, he was difficult, challenging, a wander risk and not responsive to eating, taking meds or (ADLs) Activities of Daily Life. The connection George has made with my dad has helped him with taking meds (somewhat) with assistance taking showers, eating and keeping engaged in his surroundings. George has shown incredible compassion in caring for my dad and has really made a magnificent transformation in his appearance and well-being. George talks to my dad like he is an old friend/coworker and listens to his conversations. He redirects his anger and keeps him safe from harming himself and others. George takes my dad for walks in the hallway to deescalate possible behavioral outbursts. He is attentive to my dad's needs medically and socially treating him with dignity and respect as the person he used to be before his diagnosis altered him. He encourages my dad to eat meals by feeding him a couple of bites and my dad will then feed himself. He does not force care on my dad instead is extremely patient and understanding. George is a very compassionate, caring, excellent nurse demonstrated by the care my father is receiving. My family has a deep appreciation for the outstanding care provided to my dad by George.
