George was my nurse and I will never forget him. He was patient, engaged, and kind.
When I woke up after my abdominoplasty, I realized immediately that something was wrong. I was in the worst pain in my life. This is saying a lot, as I delivered three babies naturally. I was crying out in pain and desperately asking for help. George was my nurse and I will never forget him. He was patient, engaged, and kind. I told him I was having muscles spasms and he asked anesthesia for something to help with them. He gave me the prescribed pain medication but it wasn’t helping. I am a nurse for the health system and work in the Poison Center, so pharmacology is my second language. With this knowledge, I asked for a benzo or antispasmodic. The providers ordered me an oral dose of Robaxin. I looked at George and said, “Are you kidding me? This will take forever to work since my gut is probably not even awake yet!” At that point, I heard him advocate further. In the midst of all this, my bed malfunctioned. After this surgery, you are supposed to be in a beach chair position, but the bottom of the bed wouldn’t bring my knees up. George helped me get my knees elevated on pillows until he was able to help me transfer to a new bed. During all this, George helped me breathe through the pain and even got me to laugh! I was trying to do Lamaze breathing but I told him I didn’t remember it very well as my youngest is 18. I asked for my husband but because of COVID, he couldn’t come back. I asked ‘George, can you help me remember how to breathe?’ He said he wasn’t any younger than I was and that got me to laugh! Then I started asking for a CRNA friend who works at VCU. George couldn’t find her but he continued to talk to me, distract me and do everything in his power to help me through this unbearable experience. I could tell he had another patient and the PACU was very busy. Through all this, George never let on that I was a difficult patient and made me feel like a top priority. He was my anchor in the darkness and the voice of comfort that I will always remember. I think most patients probably don’t remember their PACU nurse. As such, they probably don’t get the credit they deserve for the amazing work they do every day. Please let George know how very much I appreciate him and all he did for me! He is the epitome of a DAISY Nurse.
