Georgeanne was floated to another floor where she graciously accepted the position of being the charge nurse as well as having her own team of boarder babies with NAS. This was her second consecutive day floating to this unit. I stopped by to borrow some supplies and noticed she was very busy. She maintained a wonderful attitude with her team of babies and with the physician and ARNP that was present and requiring her assistance. I offered to help her, and she allowed me to do so. She took the time to make sure I understood exactly what her needs were and what the needs of her patients were. I noticed that one of the NAS babies on her team had a new zip-up onesie on. I fed and burped the baby and placed her back in the bassinet. Shortly after a young lady came to the door. It was the mother of the baby. It was then I witnessed an amazing moment. The mother noticed the baby's new onesie and mentioned it to Georgeanne. She told Mom that she picked it up just for her baby and proceeded to give her a giant diaper bag full of items that would help this mom take care of her new little one. Georgeanne did this all on her own. She did not ask the hospital for help. She did this out of the kindness of her heart for her patient and for that patient's mother.
I was overwhelmed by the compassion that I witnessed from Georgeanne to this mother who was struggling with her own circumstances. She found a respectful way to advocate for her patient and offer knowledge to this new mother. She personifies exemplary practice which will lead to quality outcomes for both this baby and her mother.
