In a pull to the Burn Unit, I was giving a report to the night shift. My patient's wife came to the nurse's station to say her husband had a fairly substantial accident involving the bed, floor, bathroom, and lower dressings. I went to help my patient and his wife with the help of a PCT. By the time we cleaned the patient and his bed it was getting late. I noticed his lower extremities' dressing was soiled and needed to be changed. I am not one of the normal nurses who does the dressing changes but knew the patient and his wife were concerned so I was going to do my best.
Georgia just happened to be in the room signing off to her oncoming night shift and noticed what had happened. Without giving it a second thought she was at my side asking what she could do to help. She had worked all day with a difficult assignment, and I know she was tired and ready to go home. What a selfless act for a nurse to do. This shows Georgia's dedication as a nurse to this unit and its patients and her compassion to her fellow nurses. She stayed and helped me change this dressing and also spoke to the family to make them more comfortable about the situation, and when it was done she made sure there wasn't anything else I needed.
Georgia is awesome! I wish everyone could strive to be more selfless, compassionate, and caring for others the way she was to me and my patient. I left the unit that evening way earlier than I would have had I not had her help. She is a true diamond in the Burn Unit, and her act of kindness was noticed and it was greatly appreciated.
