Georgia was in our high acuity section of the department with an orientee and took it upon herself to get the orders done.
I think it's important to share what happened during all the chaos in the Emergency Department. There was a patient who was waiting in triage. He and his family member asked how long the wait would be to be seen, they had been waiting for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. I apologized for the wait time and told them that, unfortunately, the wait was extremely long and that the next person to be seen had been waiting about 14-15 hours. The family asked to speak to the charge nurse who then, to appease the family, got a few orders put in for the patient to get the ball rolling. Unfortunately, triage was so busy with 50+ people, that it was going to take a long time for someone to get to those orders. Georgia was in our high acuity section of the department with an orientee and took it upon herself to get the orders done. It was chaotic, but she took the time to go out of her way to help a patient whom she didn't necessarily need to go out of her way to help. She was slammed with so many other things to do and still took the time to go above and beyond. The patient ended up having intraperitoneal free air in the right upper quadrant of their lung and was immediately taken to another area of the department for very close monitoring. Georgia left her assigned area to assist in helping a patient in triage. This led to expediting a patient’s care and preventing a bad outcome had the patient remained waiting with 50 others to be seen.
