Since the first day I started working here, Georgina has been an example of a compassionate, dedicated, family-centered nurse. She goes above and beyond as evidenced by her completion of the expert level CCAP. She is a model of the Pineapple way, teaching by example. Her caring and compassionate nature were exemplified in the following event.
At the end of a long shift, a full code was brought into the ED by EMS. After several rounds of CPR and epi, resuscitative measures were stopped. Attention then focused on the wife who accompanied the patient. She appeared stunned by the situation. When asked if we could contact someone for her, she replied yes, but she only knew her friend's first name. She arrived in such a hurry with the ambulance, no cell phone was brought. Georgina attempted to find contact information for the wife and engaged the admitting staff in the search. Unfortunately, this was a dead end. The woman was visibly upset, searching and researching the papers in her briefcase for any friend's phone numbers. Knowing she was getting off shift, and acknowledging the grief this woman was in, Georgina offered to give the widow a ride home. Georgina did not simply see a need and talk about it, she acted on it. The same quality care Georgina provides for her patients, she now extended to the family of the deceased.
Georgina jumped into action, and she inspired me to go along and assist. It became apparent during the car ride home that there was more than shock confusing this woman. The woman clearly had some sort of dementia. Georgina had obtained the woman's address from the deceased husband's ID. The plan was to take her home and obtain her cell phone. At this point, it seemed the woman should not be left alone. Georgina was very kind and compassionate. She skillfully obtained information from the woman and reassured her along the way. Following a shocked and confused Alzheimer's woman's directions eventually, a friend was found to care for her, keep her safe, and assist with the funeral arrangements. Throughout the process, Georgina updated the Nursing Supervisor at the hospital to keep her informed.
The friend of the woman was very impressed regarding the dedication and resourcefulness of Georgina. She is a shining example of the Baptist Vision. It would have been easy to hand her over to the next shift or to leave her shuffling through the same stack of papers looking for contact information. Instead, Georgina assisted the woman in her time of greatest need and inspired me to put others before my tired, hungry self.
