He took control, checking her very quickly and letting the other staff know what he needed them to do. His demeanor was so professional, and he spoke to my mom gently and calmly so as not to upset her.
When my mother was at Celebration Hospital, she was in Neighborhood F with a T11-T12 fracture which she had rods placed in her spine. She came out of surgery and was not doing well. She was aggressive, combative, hallucinating, argumentative, not eating and she forgot her son. Gian was so kind and gentle with her, even though it was difficult. He always encouraged her to try to eat. He did so many great things, but one thing that was so important was that he stopped me and asked if the behavior she was exhibiting was normal. I told him no. Right away, he said, we need to check if she has a urinary tract infection. He explained to me that in elderly patients, urinary tract infections can affect a patient's mental function in addition to the anesthesia and pain meds. He came back in less than a hour stating prior tests did show she did have a mild UTI and he had reached to the DR(s) to indicate there was an issue. A new hospitalist and neurology stepped in. After antibiotics and the removal of pain meds, she slowly started coming back.
There was also an incident when the PT was in her room after surgery, and her vitals dropped very quickly. The PT hit the emergency button on the wall behind the bed. Gian was in the room in less than 5 seconds, as well as 3-4 other staff members. He took control, checking her very quickly and letting the other staff know what he needed them to do. His demeanor was so professional, and he spoke to my mom gently and calmly so as not to upset her. He explained to me what was going on and the rapid response team, would review the situation, but Mom was OK and stable.
He was so incredible, and I feel without his care, the situation would have only gotten worse before it got better.
