That last act on Gilbert's part meant as much to our family as any rudimentary care given.
While my husband was a patient at Memorial Hermann Houston, Gilbert was his first nurse. He set the bar for patient care very high, with constant vigilance to his patient’s needs. When he was a floor charge nurse, he still checked on my husband, even doing little things like changing his position when he slumped to the side, suctioning his mouth if he could tell he needed it, and swabbing his mouth with moisture. He was totally focused on his patient.
When my husband drew his last breath, he was sitting slightly upright to make breathing easier, but his head had fallen to the side, having been left in that position by his current attending nurse. Gilbert heard about my husband’s death and came by his room to express his condolences. He looked at my husband’s body, and said that would not do, upon seeing him in this contorted position. He promptly changed the bed’s position and repositioned his body so that he looked comfortable and peaceful. That last act on Gilbert's part meant as much to our family as any rudimentary care given. My husband, at last, looked at peace in death, thanks to Gilbert!
