I was admitted to the ER because of an extremely painful blockage of my bladder. My wife accompanied me, and my daughter raced over to St. Augustine from Orlando just after I'd been admitted -- she had never seen me seriously ill or hospitalized. The ER staff were exemplary, but our nurse, Gillian, went above and beyond. She was extremely knowledgeable, articulate, personable, and wise. She allayed my daughter's fears and tirelessly answered my questions and concerns. Her medical education was obviously solid and wide-ranging. Her communication skills were superb. And her interactions with fellow healthcare team members left us all feeling like the care I would receive from any of them was to be trusted. She was lighthearted without being dismissive. Brilliant without making us feel less than intelligent ourselves. Kind without being condescending. I have spent my entire career working in the field of healthcare technology, and have never seen someone who embodied ALL the values of extraordinary care the way Gillian did. It was a privilege to see her in action and to be under her expert care. I am home now, recovered, and eternally grateful for this experience, and for Gillian and her commitment to her patients and her colleagues. She truly exemplifies DAISY values and service.
