I would like to nominate Regina Johnson an educator, from the University of Kansas SON (college/school) as a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award. This nurse educator exemplifies the kind of faculty member that students, colleagues, staff and administrators recognize as an exemplary educator and an outstanding role model. I would like to nominate them because: Professor Regina Johnson is truly an exemplary educator and role model for students. Professor Johnson was my instructor for two semester of a Population Health course in the BSN program at the University of Kansas School of Nursing. Professor Johnson is not only passionate about the subject of Population Health, but she exudes a passion for her students? success every day. In the Population Health course, Professor Johnson relates subject material to local, current initiatives in order to expand students? knowledge of the area in which we live, work and play. She ?thinks outside the box? and finds or creates new, interesting assignments to relay every topic. In a practical assignment, Professor Johnson reached out to local community leaders to engage students in the foundation of a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) grant project. This project allowed students to examine real issues affecting the community, and seek out initiatives to address these issues and to improve the overall health and well-being of the entire community. Professor Johnson is also dedicated to constant self-reflection as well as empowering students to offer feedback to improve the course and activities. As a student, I truly felt her desire to constantly improve her teaching style and the course, not just for future students, but for current students as well. In addition to the incredible effort of Professor Johnson in the classroom, she went above and beyond for me, as a student, outside the classroom. The typically Capstone practicum has been completed in the hospital, acute care setting. Professor Johnson reached out to me and to other students who desired a Capstone in the Public Health setting, something that had not been done before. She worked tirelessly with school administration and possible Capstone sites in order to ensure that we, as students, could have the best possible Capstone experience to satisfy our needs of working in the Public Health sector. Professor Johnson is the ideal model for students as her kindness and passion for nursing are contagious. I am so thankful to have had Professor Regina Johnson as an instructor, and am positive that I will be a more caring, more capable nurse because of her.
