Gina will be an outstanding clinician, team player, and ethically focused leader who integrates history with present issues and sees community and population care as important.
Gina is a mature, intelligent, critically thinking, caring, ethically-based, and team oriented student. I have known Gina as her advisor for 2 years and know her to be goal-oriented, multi-tasked, balancing school and parenthood smoothly. I have two examples of why she deserves this award:
Gina played a pivotal role in documenting and alerting me to the maltreatment of vulnerable Senior residents by a paid attendant in a home for disabled adults with dementia and other conditions. Gina’s documentation of this event was exceptional - equivalent to any seasoned professional in nurse and patient advocacy employment. This documentation played a key role in creating the evidence necessary for the discharge of this employee from her employment and professional reprimand.
In working in the course required Community Assessment project of South Kenner, with Gina’s portion focused on the education section. Gina could have simply documented the schools available in the district. However, when Gina investigated more deeply into the education history, she identified the current plans to destroy the remains of the only school that was built for African American students in this area. Importantly noting how the residents of this area developed, funded, and built this building structure with their own monies and labor to provide education for their children who were otherwise not allowed to attend the “available“ public schools in this district. Gina identified critical and socially sensitive information and communicated it professionally and objectively to our clinical work group. This stimulated a meaningful discussion of the history and stressors of current events that destroy its historical values and symbolism.
