A 2 month old baby was admitted in CSICU post cardiac surgery, was suffering with chronic lungs collapse, due to this reason patient was staying with us for last one month.
One day Gina was assigned double patients and above patient was one of them. Then the following day she came for overtime duty. Usually overtime staff chooses light assignment, but she chooses the double patient assignment because she said her intention was to try her best to open the lungs of this patient. This patient was on chest physiotherapy with suctions every 2 hours. Chest physiotherapy and suction are usually done by the respiratory therapist in CSICU. Since that day was very busy, respiratory therapist couldn't get to her patient every 2 hours. So she took over the responsibility and she did chest physiotherapy and suctions every 2 hours.
Her hard work had a positive result on patient. The next day X-ray showed both lungs were opened, so patient shifted from high oxygen support to low oxygen. Doctors were happy to see the improvement of this patient, and they told patient can be moved out of ICU.
Gina is a very valuable unit resource. She is very helpful with positive attitude, always willing to help others and well loved by her colleagues. She makes sure her patients receive the best care, taking into consideration the best ways of delivering high-quality care. She is well focused and works well under pressure despite the high volume of daily needs in the unit.
As a charge nurse on that day I was witness her extraordinary effort and I am quite happy to nominate her for professional dedication and proud to be having GINA in our CSICU team as fine inspiring towards nursing excellence.
