I would like to nominate Gina for the DAISY Award as a teammate who observed the absolutely outstanding, trustworthy, and respected care she provided to one of our patients. The patient was very sick with a terminal illness and had been battling cancer for the past few months. The very first night Gina had the patient, she immediately built this rapport that I got to witness as I helped with the patient's dressing changes and getting her comfortable, as she was in a lot of pain. The patient expressed her gratitude that Gina was her nurse that night, as she listened and respected her during a really hard time. The patient even stated to Gina, "I needed you tonight!". She was in so much pain and just moving in the bed was difficult, but Gina encouraged her and never gave up in helping to make her comfortable and explain her plan of care while speaking with the doctor and making sure she didn't miss any regimens she was doing at home. Gina listened to her not only about her cancer and what she had been through and the difficult times she was facing as she sobbed and explained that she has two children, and one is very young, but also about her life and the experiences she had seen as a previous caregiver. The trust she gained with Gina stood out to me because not all patients are able to open up to someone the way she did with Gina. The patient thanked her often for just being there and helping her so much. Gina truly dedicated so much time and care to this patient to ensure she was comfortable. The patient was very sick and exhausted, but I believe if she had the strength, she would have nominated Gina for the DAISY Award herself!
