August 2026 Honoree
Gion Vazquez, RN
I would like to commend Gion Vazquez from the CICU for the extraordinary compassion and dedication they demonstrated while caring for a patient who had recently received an LVAD. Adjusting to life with an LVAD can be overwhelming, and this patient was struggling emotionally with the reality of their new diagnosis and the significant lifestyle changes it required.
Recognizing that the patient's needs extended beyond the physical care, Gion went above and beyond to support the patient's emotional well-being. They arranged for the patient to attend an LVAD community event at the hospital, giving them the opportunity to meet others who were thriving while living with an LVAD. This experience provided the patient with hope, encouragement, and a sense of belonging during a difficult time.
In addition, Gion took the patient outside, allowing them to enjoy fresh air and a change of scenery. What may seem like a small gesture had a profound impact on a patient who had been struggling with sadness and uncertainty. Through these acts of kindness, Gion helped the patient see that life could still be meaningful and fulfilling despite their diagnosis.
Gion exemplified holistic patient care by addressing not only the patient's medical needs but also their emotional and psychological well-being. Their compassion, empathy, and commitment to improving the patient's quality of life embody the very spirit of the DAISY Award.
