The GISSU team was concerned with the safety and stability of the patient’s discharge as well as the well-being of his grandson.
Giovanna “Gigi” Kha Marino learned from Mary Brignac ENT NP about a potentially difficult social situation with a patient that was going to be admitted for a surgical procedure. This gentleman was the guardian of a minor (his grandson) who needed to stay at the hospital throughout the patient’s post-operative period since there was no family or friends available to care for him. We subsequently approved for the grandson to stay post-op with us if they couldn’t identify a backup. The patient arrived and was admitted to GISSU accompanied by his grandson. Throughout his hospitalization, the GISSU staff, case manager, social worker, and unit director learned that the patient was experiencing serious financial struggles (on top of his health issues) including a pending foreclosure on their home. The GISSU team was concerned with the safety and stability of the patient’s discharge as well as the well-being of his grandson.

On Wednesday Gigi put out a call to the GISSU nursing team asking, “Who wants to contribute and do a bake sale for this family?” This is where all the action began. Within the first 24 hours, Gigi had raised $1100 from personal and work contacts. Over the next two days, the GISSU team including case management bought and baked carrot cake, rice crispy treats, and other goodies. Literally, I think every unit, including OR, Dialysis, Endo, Ancillary departments (CMS, EVS, Pastoral Care, Patient Experience, Dietary, Clinical Educators, Nursing Professional Development, Infection Prevention/Control PI) and various physicians came by the department to contribute their heart, time, and money! Some people didn’t come by for a treat but just to support and donate. Some of the senior leaders stopped by to help encourage and support the cause. By Friday at 8 pm was officially the Bake Sale Day!!

The department had raised $4151 by patient discharge date and the team had raised $5292.36 in total. In addition to the funds raised by the team, Gigi contributed another $500 and paid for the patient’s discharge medications. The patient and his grandson were extremely grateful for the care and love they received from this team. This was an act of true caring, compassion, kindness, and a call to help two human beings who needed support at their greatest time. This team never gave this opportunity a second thought and stepped up to make sure this gentleman and his grandson were cared for. For this selfless act of kindness, I believe the GISSU team deserves to be recognized.
