These two exceptional nurses acted immediately to prevent further harm.
Nursing involves more than just assessment, medication administration, comfort care, and ventilation management, among other tasks. These nurses demonstrated remarkable bravery by taking an unconventional action to save a patient.
At midnight in December, the patient in room 8 showed withdrawal symptoms. His primary nurse called for urgent assistance as he began to wake.
While preparing his medication, the patient bit his right wrist restraint, tore the left one, and then suddenly jumped onto the bed. Almost simultaneously, he pulled his left IV and gown, causing the IV pole to fall and blood to spill onto the floor.
He then ran out of the Respiratory ICU, with Alvin De Guzman and Gleddilyn McElroy close behind. Gleddilyn loudly alerted the floor nurses on the 4th floor.
The 24-year-old patient was determined and strong. He reached the east exit and was about to jump when Alvin managed to catch him and started pulling him back inside. Gleddilyn joined in, grabbing him to pull him to safety.
These two exceptional nurses acted immediately to prevent further harm. Security and staff arrived to assist in returning the patient to his ICU bed.
We recognize Alvin De Guzman and Gleddilyn McElroy for the Daisy Award for their bravery—they acted without hesitation to save and protect the patient.
