Glenn Grodrian exemplifies what it means to be an extraordinary nurse. He is compassionate, kind, and gentle and advocates for his patients. Here is an example of his extraordinary care.
Glenn was working a 12 hour shift in the four bed Neuro Observation room. One of his patients was initially admitted with a history of sudden and acute abdominal pain. An initial CT scan revealed significant fluid and inflammation around the pancreas and a 2.5 cm aneurysm. Further evaluation revealed a ruptured splenic aneurysm. The patient was taken to the operating room for a surgical repair. His post-operative course was tenuous at times and he was eventually transferred out of the ICU to the neuroscience observation room.
Glenn was caring for this patient on the day I came to round on him for the surgical team. The patient was in the bathroom when I started to exam him. I noticed that his heart rate was rapid and irregular. I told Glenn I thought the patient was in atrial fibrillation with a rapid heart rate. Glenn immediately knew what to do. He assisted me in getting the patient safely back into bed, instructed ancillary staff to get the cardiac monitor and started taking vital signs. He monitored the patient closely while I notified the surgeon that the patient would need to be transferred to telemetry for further observation and care. While this may seem like a usual response to a cardiac emergency, Glenn is a neuro-trained nurse and cardiac nursing is not his specialty. Given that his expertise was not in cardiac nursing, Glenn knew exactly what to do.
Working beside a skilled nurse in an emergency situation makes all the difference. After stabilizing the patient, Glenn turned his attention to the patient's wife. He calmly discussed the situation and was able to diffuse her fears. He offered supportive listening which was most helpful. Nurses are at the front line of every day patient care, interacting with people and facing the everyday patient care decisions. Having a nurse with extraordinary set of skills to manage the complexities of patient care and patient care emergencies is paramount to the delivery of excellent patient care. This is the type of excellent patient-centered care that Glenn provides every day he works. I am humbled by his kindness and in awe of his ability to make a difference in the lives of others.
Glenn is an extraordinary nurse and I believe he deserves a DAISY Award.
