Glenn believes in everyone's ability to be excellent and knows what they are capable of. He encourages and tests their strengths.
Glenn has always been such an incredible advocate for our unit. As an Assistant Nurse Manager, the moment he sets foot at the nurse's station, he is immediately ready to take charge of any situation that we face in the ER, no matter what. He truly is our strongest leader. He fights for his staff and has high expectations of them, coordinates the unit, makes things magically run smoothly in the craziest of chaos, and is always there, front and center, to be of excellent service to patients and their loved ones. His vision of the unit is for every staff member to shine in their best way, excelling in productivity, a clean, fully stocked unit ready for anything at a moment's emergency, respect for all, and for everyone working together as a team to have control despite whatever chaos is exploding around us. He does this flawlessly every day, and I admire it greatly. Acting as an interim manager, taking over when we really needed him, he kept us afloat when things unexpectedly gave us very rocky waters. He went over and beyond to keep this vision intact and helped us get through that storm.
Glenn completely exemplifies our RISES values, and honestly, I feel this is where he truly shines the best. He truly respects every single staff member and sees them as all equal. There is never a hierarchy under his leadership. He treats every position of equal importance, and I honestly say this means so much. We are all so important in our unique roles to keep this unit running smoothly and provide care to our patients no matter what. He recognizes that, makes you feel valued, and makes you aware of how vital you are to this team. He never makes anyone feel small, or questions their work ethic, or doubts their competence. I have seen him treat patients with so much respect, making sure they know they are heard and cared for. He provides a positive light with his fun, bright spirit to make a patient smile and be there for visitors, too. He's the positivity we need as staff as well, and he provides nothing but encouragement and a safe place for us in this environment.
Glenn is always advocating for his nurses on the unit! Whenever there's a problem or question, our nurses are not afraid to approach him for help. He is more than willing to help the unit with any need we have. For example, I remember a time when we were extremely short-staffed for a straight week. He volunteered himself to come in at crazy hours from 3a-3p or 7p-3a after working 7a-7p days back-to-back. I was astonished at how he could put himself to work so hard and thought about how exhausting it was, and he simply said, "I love Shady Grove. We needed the help." There have been multiple times he has gone over and beyond to support short-staffing. He is also available for anything we need to call about and is always happy to help! He will fight for his nurses on the unit if there is any pushback for patient care or patient admissions. He will be a voice and advocate to make sure we are all treated with respect!
Glenn believes in everyone's ability to be excellent and knows what they are capable of. He encourages and tests their strengths. I love watching him coach us and act as our cheerleader at the same time. He is the much-needed positivity on the unit! If things are heavy, if we are in a bad place, even if mistakes are made...he never fails to address it in a positive light. Things happen... mistakes do get made, no one is perfect, and in the ER things can get chaotic, scary, tragic, explode, and you never know what can erupt at any moment. When things do go wrong, Glenn never looks for who to blame. He always focuses on finding a solution. Even if there is an individual or team of staff members that flat out made mistakes, he never scolds or belittles them. He never calls them out. He is incredibly patient, works with them to work towards a solution, and coaches them into a learning experience in the most uplifting positive response. That is what defines a leader! That is something I think is incredibly important to recognize!
