Glenna Mattson, RN, BSN

Glenna is a veteran nurse of 12 years and a graduate student. She has been a trauma nurse in the military and a combat photographer in the Marine Corps. In her applications to research course, she chose to examine emergence delirium in veterans, a condition where veterans experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from combat or military sexual trauma (MST) during anesthesia.

I nominated Glenna for a DAISY Award because of her extraordinary compassion for these veterans. She conducted a meaning PI(C)O evidence-based practice project in which she appraised primarily qualitative or descriptive studies to compile best practices in this area. Because there is limited research on the topic, she focused on the experiences of veterans with emergence delirium and investigated measures to help with prevention. She discovered simple solutions that she has advocated for such as dimming the lights in the PACU.

Glenna's patients have benefitted by receiving evidence-based care with these simple solutions that can make a difference for them. Glenna considers her patients through Jesuit values and Ignatian reflections and shares how these personal reflections influence the care she provides for her patients. She is extraordinary.
