...we directly observed the excellent care provided by all the RNs. Yet Gloria stood out amongst all the RNs who were assigned to my room throughout my care in the hospital. She possesses the finest characteristics of an outstanding RN as follows:
Gloria demonstrated excellence in clinical experience. She was watchful of all my medical needs. She sorted through my medicine list & corrected some errors. She was adamant that I receive the correct medications on time. My IV treatment never lapsed & I never had to use the call button on RN's shift to receive my medications. I am extremely grateful for the pain medicine monitoring. Noticing that I had a lot of hair on my arms, RN asked if I would like her to shave some of the hair so that the tape could be easier to remove when the IV needed to be moved to another site. Gloria is the only nurse who has ever thought of shaving an area to make the removal of tape an easier process me. Though all of the actions that I report are expected behavior for a nurse, Gloria performed all with utmost competence & professionalism.
Gloria was compassionate in her interactions with both me and my wife. She has a great sense of humor that bonded us together. We looked forward to sharing a joke or a story with Gloria that made the time pass quickly on her shift. She enjoys her patients and is constantly vigilant to assure that the patient is receiving excellent medical care. We were both very impressed.
Gloria is a role model in the nursing community for which I am extremely grateful. She shared how at a very young age she fled tyranny in Vietnam. She left Vietnam with her parents and siblings on a boat. The boat began sinking and Gloria's family and others were rescued by a cargo ship that happened to be in the area. Her determination and spirit to achieve is evident in everything she does. She is an excellent role model for what can be accomplished regardless of hardships.
As I was being discharged from the hospital I asked the PCA to push my wheelchair to Gloria's assigned nurse's station so that I could personally thank her for her excellent care. We found Gloria in the hallway near her assigned station. I strained to stand up from my wheelchair and told her that I wanted to hug her to express my many thanks. I asked her if the Vietnamese culture allowed a hug. Gloria said, "I am an American and I welcome hugs". My wife and I think that Gloria is a tremendous asset to the MSLH. The DAISY Award would be a great way to recognize & honor our great nurse, Gloria!

... a family member came to the unit looking for a patient. This family member was elderly and speaks a little english. She helped locate the patient by calling all the unit but the patient was not on any units. She even went to the extent of accompanying them to ER but patient was not in ER. She called surrounding hospitals and found out that the patient was admitted to St Luke's Sugar Land ICU. At this point Gloria personally drove them to St. Luke's Hospital. She did this in spite of the fact that she was off duty already.
