July 2026 Honoree
Grace by the bedside
Kaylee Zulewski, MSN, RN, PCCN • Yesmine Smith, BSN, RN • Angela Moya, BSN, RN • ________________________________________
I would like to nominate this team of 3 nurses for their extraordinary compassion, teamwork, and dedication to patient- and family-centered care during a profoundly meaningful moment. These nurses cared for a patient who was actively dying. The patient's daughter was contacted and requested that a chaplain be called to perform last rites. While the chaplain had been notified and was on the way, the exact arrival time was uncertain. In the meantime, one of the nurses thoughtfully began preparing the room, ensuring a peaceful and dignified environment. Demonstrating remarkable initiative and collaboration, the other two searched for last rites and began softly playing them at the patient's bedside, ensuring the patient was not alone without this important spiritual comfort. When the patient's daughter, who is an Episcopalian minister, arrived, she was deeply moved. She expressed sincere gratitude that the nurses had not only called the chaplain but had also taken it upon themselves to provide immediate spiritual support. She later came to the nursing station and shared how meaningful that moment was, saying, “You made that the most beautiful memory of my mom's passing.” This team exemplified the essence of the DAISY Award through their empathy, creativity, respect for the patient's spiritual needs, and seamless teamwork. Their actions transformed a moment of loss into one of peace, dignity, and lasting comfort for the family.
Thank you for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
