We have joked that if we decide to have more children down the road, there is no way I could do it without Grace by my side. I
I was induced to have my second baby. I was prepared and excited as Grace was my nurse for my first delivery, and because her care was so wonderful, I made sure I requested her again. I knew I wanted her holding my hand next to me during delivery. Little did I know this birth story was going to take a wild turn.

I requested my epidural at 6:00 am, right before the nurse shift change. My husband dressed and showered prior to the anesthesia team coming in, but failed to eat any breakfast that morning. My epidural team came in and started the process. I was in some extreme pain on the bottom right side of my back, and I was bent over, squeezing my husband’s hand; it was a stressful situation, and before I knew it, my husband fell to the floor and was knocked out from the fall. Meanwhile, I am still receiving the epidural in my back. My mind went blank, and I went to the worst place possible. I didn't know what was happening, and I began sobbing and having a panic attack.

There was a code blue for my husband in the labor and delivery, and every nurse and doctor on the floor came rushing in to help my husband on the floor. I will never forget Grace zooming over to my bedside, picking my head up, and calming me down, "You are ok, you are ok, he is ok, he will be ok." Grace's voice was something I will always remember.

My husband was rushed off to the emergency department for CT and EKG scans, and I was left alone during my labor. However, I wasn't "alone" because Grace stepped up to truly be my partner and stand by my side while he was in the ER. She went above and beyond to call all of our family members to tell them we needed them to come earlier and support us. Grace was calm in the wild storm that morning. She was everything I needed in a nurse and, honestly, in a friend. Her calm and loving demeanor meant everything to me in the hardest moments of my life.

Later that day, our sweet baby girl was born at 12:41 pm. She, unfortunately, had immature lungs and was rushed to the NICU. I couldn't catch a break during this labor, but again, Grace was right by my side, telling me every step of the way she was here for me. "You are ok, your baby is in the best possible hands," I remember so many tears that day, tears for my husband, tears for my baby, and tears from the pain. I will never forget the care, love, and support that Grace DeGoler provided our family that day. She truly is the most incredible nurse.

We have joked that if we decide to have more children down the road, there is no way I could do it without Grace by my side. I feel beyond grateful for her and everything she did for us on one of the most emotional and challenging days of our lives.
