With courage and compassion, Grace embodies the spirit of nursing. Grace Nelson has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills. She is very kind and compassionate and regularly checks in with both the day shift and night shift nurses at the bedside to make sure everyone’s needs are met, and questions are answered.
Grace is an exceptional nurse leader. She is the Assistant Patient Care Manager for the Neonatal Float Team. Of all the Float Teams, this team has the most nurses. Grace is compassionate and has built a relationship with each of her nurses that is comprised of respect, trust, and support. Grace has been instrumental in growing this team and has an open-door policy for her staff.

Grace also supports the other leaders of the Float Team. She is a great person to share ideas with and feedback has been instrumental in the growth of our two leaders. She understands the value of human connections and promotes nurse development within her team. Many of her staff come to her and share personal issues/challenges. Grace listens to them and understands when her staff just wants someone to listen or when they need advice. She is open to feedback from her staff and is constantly trying to be a better leader for her team. Several times, I have confided in her on big decisions. She is patient and calm, no matter what is occurring.

Not only has Grace supported the Float Team, but she has supported NICU and ICN. Last year, NICU was in a transitional period, Grace understood the downstream effects this would have on her team and stepped up to assist ICN and NICU leadership, including patient care, and meeting with their leadership every morning to prepare for the day. She supported not only the staff during this time but also the staff of the NICU and ICN. Grace understands the bigger picture, the picture of supporting the organization vs. supporting your team.

Grace Nelson has been an amazing leader for the Neonatal Float Team. She has helped me through a transition from being a travel nurse to becoming a staff and has supported by through unit involvement and advancing on the clinical ladder. Grace is always present and sees her employees at least once a day. She has offered kind words and support through the stress of starting a job during COVID. She is most deserving of all accolades, especially a DAISY Award.

Overall, Grace is a huge part of why I love my job at LPCH and I am grateful to have her as my manager Grace Nelson from the Neonatal Float team has shown extraordinary leadership skills. Every morning she comes around and asks how our assignment is and identifies any of our needs. She listens with compassion and allows me to vent every time. She always acknowledges our hard work and gives great support. I can come to Grace with ANY needs. She makes me feel like I am part of a team that actually cares about me.

Grace Nelson has led the Neonatal Float Pool through this pandemic with compassion and courage. At every step of the way, Grace provided accurate and up-to-date information and resources. If there was a question she couldn’t answer immediately, she worked to find the answer and then got back to us quickly. Her attention to detail and her ability to communicate changes, clearly made it so much easier for the nursing staff to keep up with the changes and implement them promptly. While employees were coping with the increased stress during the past year, Grace took time to listen and support each one of us. I am thankful every day that for the first time in my 29-year career encompassing numerous hospitals, at LPCH when I see my manager walk into my work area, instead of feeling an increase in stress, I feel supported, nurtured, and cared for. When the units are busy or short-staffed, Grace does not hesitate to jump in to help with break coverage. Additionally, she supports the neonatal float nurses in maintaining our specialty roles and skills by ensuring that we are regularly pre-assigned in the NICU.

Grace Nelson is such an amazing person, manager, nurse, and friend. She is always there to listen, provide support, and encourage her team. She goes above and beyond for all of the nurses and advocates for us daily.

The Float Team management in general is phenomenal but I would love to nominate my manager, Grace Nelson. I have been working as a bedside nurse in the hospital setting for over 14 years now and no other manager has come close to being as amazing as Grace. She goes above and beyond on a daily basis. She gets her early to still catch night shift in case we need to talk about anything. More than that, she usually makes it a point to come to our bedside before our shift is over. She encourages us to further our nursing education and skills. She is honest and heartfelt in her actions and words. She is the best manager I have ever had, and this nomination is only a small token of the appreciation and respect I have for her.

Grace is an inspiring leader and role model. She is thoughtful, and caring and uses these important characteristics to lead a wonderful team. She has grown the entire Neonatal Float Team, and in addition to that, she supports NICU and ICN. Grace is always formulating a plan to improve the Float Team and Johnson Center. She supports us as leaders by listening to our day-to-day issues and helps us figure out ways to problem-solve. Grace has personally helped me through many struggles, work related and personal-related. She is supportive and deserves this award more than I can say.

Grace Nelson is the best manager I have ever had. Many managers have been bosses, but Grace leads, she leads by example. She has an empathetic heart along with the strength to advocate for others, which I believe are the cornerstones of the best nurses. She goes out of her way to be present, listens, and assist. Her genuine interest in my well-being as a bedside nurse makes me feel appreciated and heard. I am sure I have vented to her more than once, and every time she inspires and encourages me to advocate for change. She provides so much positive feedback that I feel like I can accomplish any goal I work toward. Grace is an exemplary leader and I believe an award like the DAISY Nurse Leader Award is exactly what she deserves.

Grace Nelson is a top-of-the-line leader. She not only cares about our professional lives in the Neonatal Float Pool but our personal lives as well. Grace is out in the NICU and ICN right before morning shift change, checks in her off-going night shifters and on-coming day shifters, and in recent months, she has jumped right in to help out in the NICU herself. She is very accessible and goes above and beyond to help whether she has the answers immediately or if she needs to do some digging to find solutions. Grace has always been an incredible manager in the eyes of us Neonatal Floats and has really flexed her leadership skills recently. She exudes DAISY Nurse Leader qualities every single day!

For the past 3 years, I have witnessed Grace go above and beyond as a nurse manager. Having been a nurse for 8 years and a travel nurse for 4, I have never had a manager as kind, compassionate, and involved as Grace. She regularly checks in and encourages staff growth and participation and always offers support with any ideas or concerns staff may have personally or involving patient care. She is very deserving of DAISY recognition and should be celebrated for her continued contribution to the Johnson Center and Lucile Packard.

Grace Nelson is a superb leader. She is caring and compassionate about everyone personally and professionally on her team. From my personal experience, she approaches me weekly just to see my week is going and if I have any triumphs or concerns. Taking this extra time out of her busy schedule is such a rarity for management. Being a part of her team, I feel like a valued member instead of a number filling a space. Grace is invested in being part of our support system in achieving our professional goals. Grace is an extraordinary asset to management as well as nursing and her actions should not go unrecognized. Grace Nelson embodies all of the qualities that a DAISY Nurse Leader represents!
