Grace sought to foster a relationship with the patient, and by the end of the shift, they were sharing a secret handshake.
While working a night shift in the Pediatric ICU, Grace Parker cared for a patient with global developmental delays who was also deaf and aphasic. During her shift, Grace went above and beyond to communicate with this patient in creative ways. Grace learned ASL symbols throughout her shift in an effort to meet her physical and emotional needs. Grace sought to foster a relationship with the patient, and by the end of the shift, they were sharing a secret handshake. Of note, the patient's mother was not interested in knowing ASL. Grace and her preceptor provided the mom with information about classes for parents of the deaf to learn ASL at the MS School of the Blind and Deaf. By the end of the shift, the mother felt empowered to sign up for a class!
