Grace is an amazing nurse. Her empathy and compassion for her patients are qualities you can't teach; they're purely organic.
Grace shared with me how she prayed with her patient. The patient was fragile and very sick and had several surgeries without improvement. Her loving husband was always at her bedside, and the patient had been strong and courageous for him. The patient's faith was strong, and she had requested to have the priest come to deliver the sacrament of the sick.
Grace knew pastoral care would not be here for a few days and would only come for emergencies, but she was so moved by her patient's request that she called for him despite it not being an emergency. She explained that her patient was in need.
I was moved by her respect, love, and compassion for the patient, and by her honoring her religious desire for a pastoral blessing. It brought calmness and peace to a very sick patient.
