Greg, the charge nurse, came and talked with me and my husband giving us insight into the situation that brought us to the ED. My husband, a large man, could not catch his breath and was panicking. He was admitted right away with low oxygen readings which was stressing his heart and increasing his blood pressure. He explained to us he had seen my husband and me in the emergency room and could see how both of us were not breathing very effectively at all. We both have COPD and were working ourselves ragged with short exhales hurrying to inhale before exhaling. He showed us how to purse our lips and blow out our fowl air. He had us practice as if we were blowing up a balloon. He talked to us using words we could easily follow and gave us direction in a simple manner. We were able to modify our breathing techniques following his directions. He was not my husband's nurse, but he came to his bed when his machine was sounding an alarm, corrected the problem, paused to speak to us and then came back to speak with us again. He took time to educate us when he didn't have to spend the time doing that. He seemed concerned that my husband was still struggling after 2 days of being a patient. My husband was the patient, not me, but I had a cough too and he spoke with both of us. I was very impressed. He was effective in getting my husband to listen and finally do something to help himself get better.
