Recently, Gregg discharged a patient that needed wheelchair transport, but transport services were quite backed up. He canceled the transport request, grabbed a wheelchair, and transported the patient to his family's car at the main entrance.
On the way back to the elevators, there was an older woman standing at the top of the stairs across from the gift shop. She appeared unsteady and winded, leaning against the railing. Gregg approached the woman to see how he could help. She said she needed to get to the Broadway pharmacy because she was all out of her diltiazem and "needed it real bad." Gregg sat her in the wheelchair and told her he would bring her to the pharmacy. The woman talked the whole way there in disbelief that a nurse would take time away from their job to help her and push her down the long ramp to the pharmacy. Gregg explained that caring for the family of a patient is part of caring for the patient and he was happy to do it. He took her to the pharmacy, helped her get her medications, and pay for them, then brought her back to the elevator and to her husband's room on the 5th floor. He helped her get settled and shared a greeting with the patient in Polish, the patient's language. The woman asked him how he knew Polish. He stated that he liked to learn a little greeting in a few different languages as it comes in handy when you want to brighten a patient's day.
The woman was most impressed that even though Gregg works on a different floor, he came back to the 5th floor about 20 minutes later to make sure she had taken her diltiazem and was no longer feeling unwell.
