Gretchen accompanied the baby to the NICU after delivery and settled into a chair with the baby wrapped in warm blankets. She gently swayed in a rocking motion and cooed to the baby with a soft voice. Gretchen's face and attention was focused wholly on her tiny little "adopted" patient who was destined to live only a short while. But because of Gretchen, the baby lived her life surrounded by love and comfort from her voluntary caregiver.
