Gretchen Heckel, BSN, RN, is a shining example of what it takes to be a nurse clinician. She has a wide range of expertise and knowledge of the complex neurosciences patients. As a charge nurse, she gives the unit the resources they need to provide the best and safest care. She does this all with a smile on her face. She maintains a positive attitude even in stressful, urgent situations. The physician she works with raves about her, which demonstrates how well she can collaborate with others. The patients that she works with respect her opinion. She cares about going the distance with education, and always attends conferences to stay current with the population she serves.
Gretchen is extremely knowledgeable both with regard to neurology and with navigating the complex health system. She maintains close contact with patients and families, and effectively communicates with them about very complex subjects. Gretchen knows her resources, both within Children's Hospital and the community. She is a go-to resource for everyone on the unit. Gretchen has recently taken on an interim leadership role, in which she has excelled in effectively keeping things running smoothly, and has gracefully navigated potential pitfalls. She always has a positive attitude and is energetic and passionate about patient care. When needed and without question, she takes the lead in the Neurosciences Department. She takes ownership of her job duties and performs them in an exemplary manner, and is always thoughtful and caring with coworkers and families.
