Gwen takes an amazing care of the department as a charge nurse, but she is also helping doctors and nurses in critical situations. Yesterday, when my patient got accidentally extubated, she immediately knew what to do. She handed me the endotracheal tube as well as the laryngoscope while I was assessing the patient and found out that the patient was extubated. The rest of the personnel were busy helping the surgeon and the GI doctor, Gwen was the exceptional one who paid attention to the patient's safety.

Gwen came into an operating room to see if the circulating nurse needed any help with the case set up and saw that the 7 year old patient on the operating table was upset. She stopped what she was doing and held the little girl's hand while the anesthesiologist drew up all his meds. She took time away from running the schedule and assisting the nurse in order to comfort a scared child. By the time the patient went to sleep Gwen had her telling the OR all about her plans with her siblings this summer. If my child was to have surgery I would want someone like her taking his hand and reassuring that everything was going to be ok!

Gwen is the flow coordinator of the Miller Children's OR and she is constantly going above and beyond her job in order to keep the department (and its staff) happy and efficient. She works closely with the surgeons to ensure they have everything they need to perform a safe and successful surgery. She is always available to assist with whatever needs arise in the department. She is a true example of a great nurse!!
