I am 80 years old and was admitted to the ER with impacted bowels.

I received excellent care as I progressed from the ER to Observation and then to the 5th floor, but it was during the handoff to Gwen that I came to understand how brilliant nursing could be.

I was in a lot of pain and couldn’t receive stronger pain medication. Gwen knew how to reduce my pain without causing further damage. Every step of the way through my story of what was happening, Gwen had an intervention that reduced my pain and discomfort.

Gwen also put each treatment in context so that I understood not only what was happening step by step, but also how each treatment related to the overall problem.

My condition was complicated, involving not only my bowels, but also my urinary tract and hemorrhoids. Because of Gwen, I was able to understand the interactions between these symptoms and became more committed to following all of the instructions provided.

Gwen clearly has an amazing team here. Everyone on this team is excellent at their job, but beyond that, you could sense a level of respect and trust that made me confident I was receiving the best possible care.

Gwen is that unique combination of brilliance, empathy, and practical knowledge that makes for elevated excellence.

I will be forever grateful that I came under her care.
