Geisinger perioperative department is a unit unlike any other. Starting from nurse managers down to the secretaries, UDCs, each person performs their job with a smile on their face, a willingness to help one another and the knowledge needed to provide exemplary care. When things go wrong, it’s all hands-on deck without hesitation. Each nurse works hard to learn the preferences of each provider as well as the specific requirements that come with taking care of patients from every specialty.
On top of their day-to-day care, construction has been an obstacle. Periop nurses work around these barriers to afford patients the care they deserve, even if it means working out of other departments at times and making an unfamiliar environment work as best as they can.
Whether it’s a 20-year-old needing chemical resuscitation, an 8yr old needing lifesaving care or a stroke patient wheeling through the doors, with only minutes to prep before entering the OR, the nurses and CRNSs in the perioperative department communicate the needs promptly and execute the necessary care with no time wasted.
There is no other team quite like periop nurses. They deserve the recognition of the DAISY Team Award as they exemplify what it means to be a nurse-led team.
