Caring, integrity and compassion are skills that cannot be taught, yet despite the heavy patient load assigned to this nurse that night she was able to exhibit those skills and others that make her an excellent DAISY candidate.
That night Ha'ani was assigned a patient on comfort care measures that was close to the end of life with no family at the bedside and a neighbor that would briefly visit as she herself had just lost her mother a few days prior. As I was leaving the unit that night I found Ha'ani sitting at the patient's bedside holding his hand ensuring the patient was comfortable and that he knew he was not alone during what could be his last night. Ha'ani conversed with the patient demonstrating, respect and compassion, and advocated for the patient by respecting his last wishes and ensuring all his needs were met. It takes an extraordinary nurse like Ha'ani to be able to provide patients near the end of life with the comfort, support, and respect they deserve and so she deserves to be recognized for her continued commitment to providing excellent patient care.
