Haley Culpepper is one of the most genuine, kind-hearted nurses in the unit. She goes above and beyond for each and every patient she gives care to. We've recently had a patient who is in process of transitioning to palliative care for her recurrent cancer. She was supposed to have a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World to celebrate her birthday, but unfortunately, that had to be canceled due to her condition worsening. Upon hearing this, Haley, with the help of the attending and fellow on service, decided to throw her a birthday party in the garden so that the patient could enjoy a little bit of time outside of the PICU. The Moana themed luau was complete with leis, a Moana cake, games, gifts, balloons, and a visit from Moana herself. The patient's birthday happened to fall on a day that Haley was not working and she came in with all the stuff to set up, celebrate, and clean up out of the goodness of her heart. The patient's parents were brought to tears with gratitude and were thankful that despite her condition we did the best we could to make sure their daughter felt like the princess she is for a day. Haley truly epitomizes the type of nurse we should all strive to be and I'm honored to work alongside her.
