Due to several chronic health issues, I have had numerous extended stays in local and out of state hospitals, including the mayo clinic. I have encountered nurses who are highly skilled and professional. Rarely have I encountered a nurse who is both highly professional and who takes the time to listen to the patient's concerns.
During my recovery from surgery at Sentara, Haley served as the RN on several of my day shifts. During this period there were instances when wound dressing changes resulted in severe pain. Haley took the time to understand how desperate I felt when the medications prescribed were not providing comfort. She contacted the attending physicians and explained to me the rules regarding pain medication prescriptions. Based on her extra efforts to get the physician to reevaluate the situation, the medicine was modified, and the pain reduced.
The impact to me was that Haley's actions to provide additional medical care and more importantly that she made me feel like she cared that I was suffering helped to calm me down and resolve the situation so that I could continue to heal.

It has been a little over a week since my husband was Haley's patient following a kidney stoke surgery - and we are still praising her! Haley was respectful and caring when R arrived in his room towards the end of her shift. She got him settled in, comfortable and made sure he knew what to expect. She was reassuring us both.
He was happy Haley was back on duty the next morning. We appreciate her researching R's anesthesia since it was the first time he was nauseous following surgery, she was careful with his discharge instructions. Haley is a young nurse who is so professional and impressive. We trusted her totally. Nurses are great, but there is something special about Haley. She represents Sentara Leigh and its commitment to patient care well.
