In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, our mother was admitted to the St. Vincent's ICU with issues unrelated to COVID. However, we were so fearful that seeing our mother being taken into the hospital would be the last time we were able to see her. She was admitted to ICU in the evening and the next morning I spoke with Haley Stewart, our mother's nurse for the first time via phone. She explained exactly what was going on with mom and never gave us any false hope. With Haley's help, we were allowed to come to the ICU to see her and my sister and I never left. Haley was the most comforting presence throughout our stay. She was kind, compassionate, and informed. She went above and beyond to make us as comfortable as we could be. My sister and I were not allowed out of the room the three days we were there except to walk down the hallway for the restroom. Haley communicated with us, picked up food deliveries, and made sure that all of our needs, physical and emotional were taken care of. Everything Haley did proved that our mom was so much more than a number or name and words can't express how much we valued Haley the entire time she was serving our family. She helped us connect with Mom's oncologist, whose opinion we value so much. Even when it came time to discharge Mom into hospice care, Haley was right with us every step of the way. She truly was our angel! We feel like she became part of our family during that week. Mom passed in hospice care nut, Haley took what should have been a horrible and terrifying experience and turned it into a blessing. Our family will be forever grateful. Haley is in the exact place she should be doing what we believe God has called.
