My brother has been in CCU since his very extensive mouth, neck, and chest surgery. We knew that this surgery would result in him having a trach but it's still shocking to see it and to see the amount of stitches required. Let me just get this out of the way and put in front and center that my brother is a serious alcoholic. For whatever reason he has chosen to live an extremely hard life and will choose alcohol over everything. His diet of booze and cigarettes is the reason we are here in your CCU. We were raised in the same house, I am college educated, and my two other brothers work hard, yet this brother, well he is what he is, but we love him anyway. As a family, we get tired, we get impatient, even as he is in CCU. BUT, let me be very clear about this-you have a hidden gem in Haley! She should be the poster child for nurses. Her care and compassion come through every single time she walks into the room. For days, my brother was on a vent and heavily sedated. She always touched him and called his name so she could explain everything she was doing. She is the only one that did that. You have no idea what that means to me! K started going into withdrawals. NEVER once did she judge him for doing this to himself! We all know that he did. Nothing but pure compassion from her. Once, she had no idea that I had come into the unit and was silently observing her from the hall. My brother was very agitated. Bless her soul, she was holding his right hand, rubbing the top of his head, and telling him that it was Haley, she was there and not going to leave him. She kept giving him comfort and talking softly to him. I had to back up so she didn't see me cry. I'm the strong one in the family and have been in the medical field, my whole life so I know when I am in the presence of extraordinary healthcare workers, your Haley is the best there is, and you should do everything to keep her and have her teach others.
