This is just one example of the care and attention that Haley provides to her patients. She will do absolutely everything in her power to meet her patient's holistic needs.
Haley is a phenomenal nurse. She is clinically fantastic and pours her heart and soul into patient care. In the medical ICU, every patient is critically ill. There is an art to dignifying a patient in their lives and in their deaths as well. Haley had a patient who expired this morning. She admitted him into the ICU yesterday and was saddened this morning when she returned to her assignment to learn that he had coded and expired early in the morning prior to her shift starting.
While preparing the patient's body and speaking to the family regarding the patient's wishes, she learned that the patient had an ICD/ pacemaker in place and had heard that you could potentially donate those to a veterinary office upon death, where they could clean and repurpose the device for a canine. The family expressed to Haley that he stated he wanted this done when he passed. Having never heard of this, Haley took the time to investigate it for potential. She reached out to decedent affairs, her charge RN, management, and the internet to determine how to go about providing for the patient's last wishes.
While collaborating with decedent affairs, they were able to determine that Iowa State University has a program in place that the funeral home will remove the ICD, and mail it to the university, where they will clean it and donate it to a veterinary office for repurposing in an animal in need. She was tireless in her efforts, and because of her inquiries and research, this patient will have his device sent to Iowa State as he requested.
This is just one example of the care and attention that Haley provides to her patients. She will do absolutely everything in her power to meet her patient's holistic needs. We are proud of her and so grateful that she cares for our MICU patients and their families at such a high standard.
