The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who exhibit extraordinary compassion, advocacy, critical thinking, and teamwork. They are nurses who enrich the profession through practice excellence and clinical leadership. For this reason, I can think of no one more deserving of the DAISY Award than Hanna Sauvain. Hanna demonstrates excellence every day she is at work. She is a guiding light for patients, remaining calm and providing comfort in the most emotionally challenging cases. She is the nurse who never says no when a colleague needs assistance. She excels in critical thinking and is always eager to learn.

A prime example of these characteristics in action was during a night shift when a patient was acutely decompensating. The patient's call light went on. Hanna volunteered to answer it as the patient's assigned nurse was on break. She found the patient's bed filled with blood due to a massive hemorrhage. Hanna quickly intervened and notified the rest of the team. The patient was incredibly fearful as the team worked rapidly to stabilize them. Throughout the situation, Hanna remained calm and provided much-needed comfort and reassurance to the patient. When anesthesia came to bring the patient downstairs for a procedure, Hanna volunteered to travel with them to continue providing comfort and support. I was truly impressed with her ability to think critically and perform interventions in such a high-stress situation while remaining calm to support the patient. She also used the opportunity to teach the newer nurses how to use Level I, which is not often used in our unit. Due to her critical thinking and willingness to help her colleagues, the patient survived what might have otherwise been a tragic event. This is merely one example of how Hanna elevates the standard of nursing care. She consistently leads by example and role-modeling the profession's values to the highest degree. She truly deserves The DAISY Award.
