Throughout each twelve-hour shift, Hannah was a strong advocate for me, ensuring that my birth plan was honored and that my wishes were respected every step of the way.
Three years ago, I went in for an induction of labor at NMCSD, which resulted in a middle-of-the-night emergent Cesarean Section (C-Section) that was rather traumatic. In October 2025, I came to NMCSD for another induction in an attempt to do a trial of labor after C-Section (TOLAC). Although I was a bit nervous and anxious due to my previous experience, I knew a TOLAC, if successful, would lead to a quicker recovery and overall better outcome, allowing me to take care of my toddler, newborn, and return to work quicker than if I were to have a major abdominal surgery. I expressed my desire to have a natural birth from the beginning, as well as my desire to also be as comfortable as possible with pain medications and an epidural.

Fortunately, I had the privilege of having LTJG Hannah Banon as my nurse for two nights in a row. I can’t imagine my birth experience without her. From the moment she walked into my room, she radiated confidence, a calm demeanor, and compassion, quickly easing my anxiety. I was instantly able to trust her and felt comfortable with my decision to attempt a TOLAC with Hannah by my side. Throughout each twelve-hour shift, Hannah was a strong advocate for me, ensuring that my birth plan was honored and that my wishes were respected every step of the way. It was obvious that Hannah was on my side and was willing to throw down for me if need be. On the second night, as I became increasingly uncomfortable and anxious, Hannah offered countless ideas and ways to help me feel more at ease and didn’t stop until she knew I was good. This also included immediately helping me get re-situated the second I told her I was uncomfortable again. I am 5’10 and at the time weighed over 200lbs, so I am certain it was exhausting for Hannah to move me around after my epidural, but she never showed it.

As we got closer to showtime, I started asking Hannah a million questions about the entire birthday process. She took the time to listen to my concerns and explained everything in great detail, with patience and clarity, ensuring I had all the information I wanted and needed. Hannah also went out of her way to ensure my spouse was informed, helping her feel supported and involved in our baby’s birth. This was something no one else had previously done in either of my birth experiences. What stood out most was how deeply she cared not only for me as just another patient, but for our entire experience as a family. Hannah was able to anticipate my needs before I could even ask. She continuously checked in on my physical and emotional well-being to make sure I was comfortable and able to get rest when I could. Her professionalism and compassion will have a lasting impact on us. She spent her entire shift by my side during active labor and honestly and confidently coached me throughout the process. Had it not been for Hannah, I am fairly confident I would have given up and opted for a C-section, even though I wanted to avoid one at all costs. Hannah kept this in mind while encouraging me, but always let me know the decision was mine. She never made me feel guilty about asking for pain medications and genuinely seemed to care about my well-being. Hannah truly embodies what it means to be a nurse. She blends skill and knowledge with kindness and advocacy in a way that made me feel heard, seen, and safe. I am so grateful for her care and cannot think of anyone more deserving of a Daisy award.
